Caring for a swimming pool can be a bit demanding. However, the alternative – requiring that you have your pool repaired due to neglect – is even more demanding and expensive. Luckily, you don't have to go into how to properly maintain your swimming pool "blind". Throughout the course of this brief article, you'll learn some common tips for ensuring you have a perfect pool.

Water Levels

It is commonplace for water levels to fluctuate, especially during the summer months when your pool is getting a lot of use. However, you should always keep a watchful eye on the water level. As a generality, you should always make sure that your water level is halfway up to the entrance or opening of your skimmer. If the water level falls below this, use your garden hose to fill it up to the appropriate level. If your water level is too high – especially if it is overflowing – use a water pump to get rid of the extra water.

Skimming and Scrubbing

Skimming and scrubbing refers to two of the primary ways you should clean your pool. The former refers to cleaning the top of your pool and getting rid of any excess debris that might fall on top of it. A commonly used device for this act is, appropriately named, a skimmer. Scrubbing refers to literally scrubbing the basin of your pool with a pool cleansing agent. This requires draining your pool and physically washing the empty basin.

Pool Shocking

Pool shocking is a great supplemental way to clean your water levels and get rid of high bacteria levels. During a pool shock, you will add anywhere from 3 to 5 times the amount of chlorine you would normally add to your pool's water, drain the pool's water supply, and then slowly fill this level back up to normal. Pool shocking is a great way to clean your pool and make sure the water supply stays fresh, but it can be quite time consuming. It is recommended that you shock your pool once per summer or other prime swimming months.

Maintaining your pool so that you, family, and friends can enjoy it, need not be a taxing task.
